TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's immigration agency revoked the dependent-based residence permit for a Chinese influencer after she advocated on social media for the use of military force to annex Taiwan.
Liu Zhenya (劉振亞), a Chinese national known as “Yaya in Taiwan” (亞亞在台灣), posted a video on Douyin that she had been reported for allegedly using United Front rhetoric, per LTN. She was summoned for questioning by the NIA and discussed the interrogation in her video, according to CNA.
Liu questioned whether freedom of speech is restricted in Taiwan. She expressed concerns that her spousal residence permit might be revoked.
On Tuesday, the NIA said it had received reports that Liu had “openly advocated for unification through military force" with Taiwan on her social media accounts. Liu stated, “The mainland no longer needs any other reasons to unify Taiwan by force,” and "(China) has yet to unify (Taiwan) by force."
The NIA emphasized that while the government respects freedom of speech, Liu's remarks posed a risk to national security and social stability. Therefore, the NIA revoked her residence permit under Article 14 of the Cross-Strait Act.
In addition, Liu will be prohibited from reapplying for dependent residency in Taiwan for five years. She was granted time before her departure to make care arrangements for her family members in Taiwan.
The NIA urged the public to avoid inappropriate remarks, such as those that boost online traffic for profit. The agency condemned behavior that undermines Taiwan’s democratic system.
