TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred off the coast of southeast Taiwan at 1:09 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The CWA said its epicenter was 53 km northeast of Taitung County Hall, with a 12.5 km focal depth. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to gauge the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Taitung County and Hualien County. An intensity level of 3 was reported in Nantou County, Kaohsiung, Chiayi County, Chiayi, Tainan, and Yunlin County.
A level 2 intensity was recorded in Pingtung County, Taichung, Changhua County, and Miaoli County. An intensity level of 1 was measured in Yilan County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, and New Taipei.
