TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei City Government opened a drone education center at Taipei Municipal Muzha Vocational High School on Wednesday to enhance drone education for students in the city.
The center offers courses for students from elementary to high school, covering programming drone fleets, drone assembly, and drone videography. This year, it plans to add classes on drone soccer and drone video editing, available for students during the summer break, per CNA.
Deputy Mayor Chang Wen-te (張溫德) said that drone technology has been applied in fields such as environmental protection, logistics, and land management. This year, the city government will allocate NT$1.2 million (US$40,000) to support drone education in 15 schools in the city.
The city government has trained drone educators to promote drone education in schools below the high school level. It also organizes drone competitions and camps to cultivate talent in the drone sector.
Chang encouraged schools to establish drone clubs, offer specialized courses, and guide students to participate in drone competitions. The center will also provide teaching resources for educators.
The city's Department of Education said it provides free training courses for teachers to obtain drone certification and subsidizes the certification exam cost. The courses will help participants earn a basic operation license for drones under 2 kilograms, which can be used for teaching.
The department also conducted three drone training sessions last year, training 50 teachers. This year, it plans to hold 18 more training sessions.
The department added that it will continue collaborating with the Civil Aviation Administration to receive technical support and regulatory guidance. It will also arrange for personnel to observe domestic and foreign drone facilities.
