TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Post experienced a system malfunction on Thursday due to issues with its server, causing disruptions for over two hours across post offices nationwide.
The outage resulted in the interruption of ATM withdrawals, with some customers receiving deductions without getting cash. Chunghwa Post has assured affected customers that all impacted transactions will be refunded, with processing expected to be completed by the end of the business day on Friday, per CNA.
During the malfunction, 252 cross-bank ATM withdrawals were disrupted, impacting over 1,000 Chunghwa Post customers. The company said customer rights would not be compromised, as all refunds for deducted but undispensed funds will be processed promptly.
Chunghwa Post Deputy General Manager Chen Tung-liang (陳棟樑) explained that instability stemmed from a malfunction in their internal network server system. The backup mechanism failed to function as expected.
The issue was first detected at 11:34 a.m. and was resolved by 2:15 p.m. However, mobile postal services, which operate via the internet, were not affected and continued functioning normally.
Chen noted that earlier, there was an equipment change at Chunghwa Telecom’s data center, but it remains unclear whether this was the primary cause. The investigation is ongoing, and the company is reviewing relevant records to determine the exact cause of the disruption.
Chen apologized for the inconvenience caused to customers and assured that the company is committed to identifying the root cause of the issue and reviewing its backup mechanisms to prevent future disruptions.
