TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Farglory Ocean Park said that its "mermaid carnival" will get underway in April, per CNA.
The park held a promotional press conference Thursday, announcing its live mermaid show will begin in April. A portion of the revenue will be donated to support the production of the Public Television Service’s documentary “Shipwrecks Taiwan,” showcasing the park's commitment to marine conservation.
On May 24-25, the park will collaborate with the Taiwan Freediving Development Association and Mermaid Federation International to host a mermaid dance competition. During the event, it will also host a "little mermaid experience" activity, designed for children to participate.
Wu Ping-yu (吳秉宥), secretary general of the Taiwan Freediving Development Association, said the competition will feature participants from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The event will be divided into individual and team categories for adults, as well as categories for children and teenagers.
Wu hopes the event will enhance the professional level of mermaid swimming in Taiwan and help promote the sport to a broader audience.
Teng Chun-jen (鄧淳仁), business director of Farglory Ocean Park, said the park's average visitor attendance reached 70% on the Feb. 28 holiday. He added reservations for the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Festival holiday have surpassed 70% of capacity.
The park invested over NT$10 million (US$310,227) last year to upgrade park facilities, dining services, and hardware to enhance the visitor experience. Its goal is to achieve annual revenue of NT$700 million and attract 800,000 visitors each year.
