TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwanese tour groups planning to travel to China should register with the government in case they encounter problems, Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) said Friday.
His comments followed several instances of Taiwanese travelers going missing or being arrested during visits to China. In the most recent example, Taiwan said on March 7 that the Chinese authorities had detained a couple of Unification Church members.
Chen told reporters that if an incident occurred during a trip, Taiwan’s government would only have sufficiently helpful information if the group members had registered beforehand, per CNA. He said the idea was a response to comments made by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) after a national security meeting Thursday.
The Tourism Administration said it would assist travel agencies in making travelers aware of the risks involving visits to China. Countries friendly to China, including Cambodia, Laos, and some African nations, could also pose problems, as their governments are likely to help Beijing in persecuting or intimidating Taiwanese residents and visitors.
