TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The TPP’s Liu Shu-pin (劉書彬) was sworn in as Taiwan’s newest legislator on Friday to fill the seat vacated by a party member last month.
Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) swore Liu in as seven TPP members watched at a ceremony in the legislature. Liu said that as a lawmaker with an academic background she plans to uphold the TPP’s “rational, pragmatic, and scientific attitude” to service and government supervision.
Liu moved up on the party list after Wu Chun-cheng’s (吳春城) resignation. Wu resigned amid conflict of interest accusations from ruling party legislators, though Wu said he stepped down having completed his mandate.
Liu said she would deal with disagreements between the ruling and opposition parties calmly. She said she would act independently without emulating other legislators.
According to the legislature’s website, Liu studied in Taiwan before graduating with a PhD from Germany’s University of Cologne. Before entering politics, she served as the dean of political science at Soochow University and as an adjunct researcher at NTU’s Risk Society and Policy Research Center.
