TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasts that a continental cold air mass from China will continue to impact Taiwan on Monday and Tuesday, potentially bringing snow to higher elevations.
Overnight and early Tuesday, temperatures in northern and northeastern Taiwan are expected to drop to 11-12 degrees Celsius, while other areas will see lows of 13-15 C, CNA reported. Daytime highs in the north and northeast will range between 12-14 C, with prolonged periods of low temperatures. In central and eastern Taiwan, daytime highs on Monday will be 16-18 C, while the south will reach 20-21 C. Outlying islands will range from 15-18 C in Penghu, 11-18 C in Kinmen, and 8-13 C in Matsu.
Cloudy skies are expected across Taiwan, with sporadic short bursts of rain in the east and mountainous areas of the west, and occasional showers in the southern plains.
With the combination of cold temperatures and moisture, the CWA said snow is possible at altitudes above 3,000 meters in central Taiwan. Snow may also appear at around 2,000 meters in the north and northeast mountains during the day Monday.
Travelers to mountain areas should be cautious of icy roads and slippery conditions.
On Monday afternoon, the Highway Bureau issued a road closure warning due to icy conditions caused by the strong cold air mass, Yahoo News reported. Taiwan Provincial Highway 14A, from kilometer marks 32 to 41, covering the Songsyue Lodge to Dayuling section, will be closed until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The affected areas include Xiulin Township in Hualien County, Renai Township in Nantou County, and Heping District in Taichung. Entry is strictly prohibited during the closure.
