TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Recall campaigns against two DPP Kaohsiung legislators gained enough support to pass the first of three stages on Monday.
The leaders of recall campaigns against Kaohsiung Legislators Huang Jie (黃捷) and Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) said they submitted extra documents to the Central Election Commission to pass the threshold, per UDN. They said they gathered more than 2,500 additional documents supporting the recalls, over double what the commission requested.
The commission has yet to confirm the submissions and allow campaigners to move to the second stage. When this happens, campaigners must gather 10% of constituents' support within 60 days to take the recalls to a vote.
Huang was elected to represent Kaohsiung’s Sixth Electoral District last year, and she was named on Time Magazine’s 100 most influential leaders. Huang survived a recall vote in 2021 when she was a Kaohsiung councilor.
Hsu was elected to serve Kaohsiung’s Seventh Electoral District in 2024. He was recently chosen to co-chair the legislature’s transportation committee.
Campaigns to recall 16 DPP legislators are underway. In addition to those against Huang and Hsu, two others against DPP Nantou County councilors have passed the first stage.
Campaigns targeting 34 KMT legislative caucus members and a suspended TPP mayor have also passed the first stage.
