TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense disclosed details of the Han Kuang 41 exercise in a report on Tuesday.
The annual exercise is based on scenarios involving the People’s Liberation Army’s gray-zone tactics and a potential PLA attack on Taiwan in 2027, Liberty Times reported. The drills are divided into three phases: a high-level military staff wargame in February, a computer-assisted simulation exercise in April, and a live-fire segment in July.
The wargame held from Feb. 17-21 convened high-ranking officers from all three military branches to collectively review joint operations plans and establish operational consensus.
The computer-assisted simulation is scheduled to run from April 5-18. This exercise will employ the Joint Theater Level Simulation system to rehearse defensive operations during realistic scenarios and hone commanders' decision-making and planning abilities.
The live-fire component is slated for July 9-18. Commanders will develop scenarios and contingency plans based on potential enemy actions.
The defense ministry emphasized that this year’s Han Kuang focuses on verifying the military’s capabilities, including executing plans, conducting joint anti-blockade operations, dispersing and storing supplies, and assessing the combat effectiveness of new weapons.
Taiwan launched a five-day “immediate response” exercise on Monday to boost the nation’s combat readiness. All military units are involved.
