TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A video promoting the second stage of the process for recalling KMT and TPP legislators and warning of Chinese influence was released on Wednesday.
Over 100 film industry professionals launched the "Taiwan Action Film Project," creating videos to promote the recall movement, per Liberty Times. Following the release of the first video, "Take Out the Trash," last week, the second video, "Word of the Day," was released Wednesday morning.
Substantial cuts to the central government's budget spearheaded by opposition legislators have led to a recall campaign that has reached the criteria for the first stage with 34 KMT legislators and one TPP mayor. A rival recall campaign by opposition party supporters has reached the first stage for two DPP legislators.
Reports have emerged that the project’s social media accounts were suspended due to “malicious reports.” The director of the Golden Horse Award-winning documentary, Yang Li-chou (楊力州), who initiated the movement, has reportedly been threatened. Yang has reported the threats to the police.
In Wednesday's video, a woman dressed in a traditional qipao reminds voters to watch out for typos on the petition form. She starts by mentioning a fictional "Mr. Huang from Xizhi" and uses the character "國" (country) as an example.
She explains that if the form is not written correctly and leaves a gap, elements could be added such as "relatives, national health insurance users, voters," or "legislative candidates like Hsu Mei-feng."
The latter refers to the birthname of KMT Legislator Hsu Chiao-hsin (徐巧芯), who was among those who met the criteria for the first stage of the recall process. Hsu is controversial for allegations of corruption, leaking national confidential information about humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and advocating defense budget cuts.
In the second half of the video, the woman advises people that if they are worried the petition might be torn up, they can ask on-site recall volunteers for help. She recommends mobilizing family members and neighbors to join in.
