TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) on Wednesday agreed with a suggestion from a lawmaker that reservists should receive training to handle drones.
During questioning at the Legislative Yuan, Chen Jun-yu (陳俊宇) of the DPP emphasized the importance of uncrewed aerial vehicles, per CNA. Koo agreed, saying 14 days of training would not be enough to learn about drones, and also practice the use of handheld weapons including Stinger missiles.
Drone exercises now held for conscripts should be expanded to include reservists, Chen said. Koo replied that the ideal would be for every member of the military to be able to use drones, but that needed more time.
The defense minister acknowledged there was insufficient airspace for the officers and conscripts to practice, even at the Army’s training center in Tainan. However, as long as the drones stayed below an altitude of 122 meters, no approval from the Civil Aviation Administration was necessary.
