TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A residential building in Taichung’s Qingshui District partially collapsed around 1 a.m. Saturday.
The collapse affected the building’s fifth and sixth floors, which were unoccupied, preventing any casualties. Authorities have evacuated all 34 residents from 13 affected households, per CNA and UDN.
The Qingshui District Office arranged temporary housing for the displaced residents in nearby hotels. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
The building, which is about 50 years old, is suspected to have deteriorated due to long-term weathering. Reports indicate the original developer faced financial difficulties during construction, resulting in an incomplete structure.
As of the second quarter of 2023, Taichung had 1.1 million registered residential units, with an average building age of 30 years. Housing units aged 30 years or younger accounted for 55.45% of the total, according to the Department of Budget, Accounting and Statistics.
