TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two tourists fell into the sea near Orchid Island's Lion Couple Rock, with one found dead Saturday morning while the other remains missing.
At 8:21 p.m. Friday, a man contacted the Coast Guard to report that he and two friends were fishing along the shoreline when one of them fell into the sea. The second friend attempted to rescue him, but both lost contact shortly after, per CNA.
In response, the Coast Guard's Eastern Branch deployed teams with remote-controlled life rings, drones, and other rescue equipment to the scene. The fire department, National Airborne Service Corps, and the Taiwan Marine Life Saving Association also assisted in the search, but efforts were hampered by poor visibility at night.
By Saturday morning, the Coast Guard confirmed the recovery of the body of one tourist, surnamed Huang (黃), near Mother Hen Rock, not far from the site of the incident. However, the other tourist who initially fell into the water, surnamed Luo (羅), remains missing.
A search is underway, with helicopter support requested to assist the operation.
The Taipei Water Lifesaving Volunteer Club urged individuals not to jump into the water to attempt a rescue, even if they are experienced swimmers. Recklessly entering unfamiliar waters can result in additional drowning victims.
The Coast Guard encourages people to immediately dial the 118 service hotline for any maritime emergencies, accidents, or rescues in sea areas, harbors, or shorelines. Life jackets are also available for loan at all harbor inspection offices.
