TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) met with a local woman in Taitung on Saturday to hear her grievances regarding the 2008 death of her son, a former Air Force sergeant.
As Lai was leaving Tianhou Temple, a woman surnamed You (尤) shouted from the crowd and attempted to break through the security cordon to speak with him, UDN reported. You is the mother of Tsai Hsueh-liang (蔡學良), a soldier who died during target practice at a Taitung military base.
Lai did not immediately respond at the temple, and You was escorted away by security. However, after being briefed on her identity, Lai adjusted his schedule and arranged to meet with her later that day.
The two met at Goben Farm, where they reportedly spoke for about 50 minutes, according to Formosa TV. You presented case files and medical records related to her son’s death directly to the president.
Tsai, who held the rank of sergeant, died from a gunshot wound on May 9, 2008. The military quickly ruled the death a suicide, but You and others have raised questions about discrepancies in the investigation. She has never accepted the official findings.
In recent months, You has petitioned both the Taitung District Prosecutors Office and the Taitung County Council to reopen the case, but her efforts had been unsuccessful.
Following her meeting with Lai, however, the case will be reviewed by the relevant authorities, UDN reported. A local task force will also be formed, with the support and supervision of 15 Taitung County Council members.
