TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred just off the coast of east Taiwan at 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The CWA said its epicenter was 9.7 km south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a 25.3 km focal depth. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to gauge the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and Nantou County. An intensity level of 3 was reported in Yilan County, Taichung, and Changhua County.
A level 2 intensity was recorded in Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Chiayi County, and Yunlin County. An intensity level of 1 was measured in Taitung County, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, New Taipei, Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
