TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi on Monday revealed his plan to reintroduce the Taiwan Allies Fund Act in Congress.
Speaking at an Atlantic Council online seminar, Krishnamoorthi pointed out the Chinese Communist Party’s strategy of buying off Taiwan’s allies. He described it as a “delicate, but deliberate, and dangerous effort” to undermine global democracy and development.
So far, Taiwan has lost 11 diplomatic allies to China, including the Solomon Islands and Honduras.
The bill aims to “support meaningful, sustainable development projects that deepen international security and welcome Taiwan into international cooperation efforts for peace and security,” the representative said. It authorizes development aid to countries that maintain official or strong unofficial relations with Taiwan, he added.
Krishnamoorthi said the bill counters China’s claim that Taiwan has no role in the international community by supporting countries susceptible to CCP pressure because of their Taiwan ties.
Most recently, Nauru severed relations after Taiwan's 2024 presidential election, despite Taiwan providing significant financial support, Krishnamoorthi said. He said this demonstrates “Beijing’s intent to punish Taiwan’s democratic choices" and "cannot continue to happen until those who recognize Taiwan become zero.”
Krishnamoorthi is a ranking member of the House Select Committee on the CCP and visited Taiwan last February.
