TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Detention Center responded Thursday that Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) was recovering well after his wife claimed he was not receiving the care he needed.
Chen Pei-chi (陳佩琪) said at a press conference earlier in the day that her husband had blood in his urine and may have kidney damage if he does not receive emergency treatment, per UDN. She was accompanied by retired NTU Medical Professor Hsieh Yen-yao (謝炎堯), who said the Taipei Detention Center, where Ko is detained, did not have the equipment to treat his condition.
In response to Chen’s claims, the detention center said Ko received outside medical care a few days ago. “As of (Thursday) afternoon, Ko is recovering well and has not shown any of the symptoms reported,” the detention center said in a statement.

The detention center did not say what Ko was treated for. It said a hospital discharged Ko back into its custody after treatment, and he is receiving follow-up care.
Ko was charged with corruption and bribery in December. He is accused of facilitating property development deals during his second term as Taipei mayor from 2018 to 2022 in exchange for bribes.
Ko was also charged with embezzling funds donated to his 2024 presidential campaign. The government’s auditor fined Ko NT$3.74 million (US$113,000) last week for breaking political donation laws during the campaign.
Ko was detained incommunicado in September, as requested by prosecutors. A court briefly lifted the visitor ban after his father’s death and allowed him to attend the funeral earlier this month, before reinstating the restriction.
