TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Railway has announced plans to seek compensation for operational losses after a vehicle blocked a railway crossing in Taoyuan, causing disruptions to train services.
The incident occurred at about 7:23 p.m. Thursday. Authorities were alerted to a car stopped on the tracks between Neili and Zhongli, per CNA and Ettoday.
The vehicle triggered an emergency alert, prompting the train operator to stop the train before reaching the crossing, preventing casualties.
Upon reviewing surveillance footage, Taiwan Railway confirmed that the driver, a 70-year-old man surnamed Huang (黃), had mistakenly driven onto the crossing and became stuck on the tracks. The incident caused delays to both northbound and southbound trains.
Train operations resumed by 8:37 p.m. after the car was towed. The driver will be cited for public endangerment by the Railway Police Bureau and referred to the district prosecutor’s office for further investigation.
According to Article 185 of the Criminal Code, anyone who damages or obstructs a road, waterway, bridge, or other public communication and causes danger to public safety would be subject to imprisonment for up to five years, detention, or a fine of up to NT$15,000 (US$453).
