TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Air Force fighter pilot candidates now undergo a "three-phase, two-aircraft" training program following a recent streamlining of the curriculum.
Previously, trainees progressed through three aircraft models—the T-34 Mentor, AT-3 Tzu Chung, and Brave Eagle advanced jet trainer—before advancing to fighter jets. Under the new structure, the AT-3 has been removed, allowing candidates to transition directly from the T-34 to the Brave Eagle, CNA reported.
Air Force Deputy Commander Chiang Kuang-hua (姜光華) recently visited Gangshan Air Base in Kaohsiung to oversee the launch of the new training framework. During his visit, Chiang received a briefing on preparations, curriculum planning, and training objectives, and held discussions with Air Force personnel. Instructors also conducted pre-flight briefings and inspections for cadets in the combat training phase.
The Brave Eagle officially took over unit training responsibilities in 2023 following the retirement of Taiwan’s F-5 fleet. That same year, the Air Force Flight Training Command was upgraded to a headquarters to enhance oversight of fighter pilot development.
