TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Kuomintang (KMT) held a rally and policy briefing in Taoyuan on Sunday, urging supporters to oppose recall campaigns targeting the city’s KMT legislators.
The event, titled “Oppose Recalls and Protect Taoyuan,” was organized to show support for Taoyuan’s six KMT legislators, all of whom have been targeted for recall by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislative caucus.
KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫), Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng (張善政), and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) were among the high-profile party members who spoke at the rally in Yangmei District, alongside several legislators, per CNA.
In addition to condemning the recall campaigns, KMT leaders defended the recently promulgated national budget, which significantly reduced central government funding. The KMT has argued that the budget redistributes resources more fairly by allocating a greater share to local governments, calling it a way to “return the money to the people.”
Speakers said the new budget will allow Taoyuan to improve infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen education support. Legislator Tu Chuan-chi (涂權吉) described the political environment as dangerous and urged the public to stand united in support of their elected officials.
Chiang Wan-an accused the DPP of fomenting division and using the recall process to undermine democracy and reverse election results. He said the people could not accept such “malicious recall efforts” and called on the public to oppose them, per UDN.
