TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held a rally in New Taipei on Sunday to gather signatures for its ongoing mass recall campaign, drawing a sizable crowd despite poor weather conditions.
Supporters gathered at the Second Sports Stadium in Banqiao District, where booths were set up to promote the recall of sitting Kuomintang (KMT) legislators across New Taipei. The event, which began at 3 p.m., was hosted by DPP Secretary General Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) and party spokesperson Wu Cheng (吳崢), per UDN.
Organizers had expressed concern over turnout due to wind and rain, but supporters braved the weather to express concern over Taiwan’s political situation and show support for the recall effort.
Sunday’s rally marked the first in a series of rallies and policy briefings under the campaign slogan “The People Are in Charge,” per ET Today. Similar events are scheduled for Taichung on April 15, Taoyuan on April 16, Hualien on April 22, Tainan on April 23, Kaohsiung on April 29, and another in New Taipei on April 30.
DPP Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), one of eight DPP lawmakers targeted by the KMT in a retaliatory recall campaign, thanked attendees for their commitment to defending Taiwan. The KMT’s effort comes in response to the DPP’s mass recall targeting 35 opposition lawmakers.
