TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung Agriculture Bureau said Monday that the city's green plum harvest season runs from March to May.
Kaohsiung's green plum cultivation covers 1,378 hectares across Liouguei, Jiaxian, Tauyuan, and Namasia districts. The city is Taiwan's largest producing region with an annual production of approximately 6,660 tonnes, per CNA.
Liouguei District Farmers' Association Director-General Lin Chih-lei (林芷蕾) said the district's plum trees produce fruit of stable quality. The green plums from Kaohsiung are smaller than those from central Taiwan, making them well-suited for products such as plum jam, plum vinegar, and plum wine.
The bureau has partnered with RT-Mart to hold a green plum promotion and DIY event. Lin said the city's farmers' associations will also offer food and agriculture education experiences to support local farming.
The city’s green plum products are available at RT-Mart and will be listed at Carrefour starting in April, the bureau added. Additionally, the products are sold on “The Best of Kaohsiung,” an e-commerce platform operated by the bureau and the city’s farmers' associations.
Last year, Kaohsiung's green plum cultivation covered about 1,395 hectares, with Tauyuan District accounting for 58% of the total area. Due to insufficient rainfall, the plum trees had a low fruit yield, resulting in less than 30% of the expected harvest.
Nantou's plum cultivation covers around 856 hectares, making up 25% of the nation's planting area, with an annual production of approximately 3,651 tonnes. The county government collaborated with the Sinyi Township Farmers' Association to host a promotional event on Saturday, drawing more than 500 participants who made crisp plums.
