TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwanese woman who has been trapped in a collapsed hotel in Myanmar since a major earthquake struck on Friday died on Monday.
The United States Geological Survey said a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in central Myanmar, about 16 km northwest of Sagaing, per CNA. Mandalay, which is near Sagaing and is Myanmar's second-largest city, suffered severe damage.
When the quake struck, a Taiwanese married couple surnamed Lin (林) were staying in Mandalay's Great Wall Hotel, which collapsed. The husband, who was near the hotel's main entrance, managed to escape, but his wife was trapped inside the fallen building.
Myanmar Taiwan Business Association Secretary-General Lo Chen-hua (羅振華) told CNA that the husband only sustained minor injuries to his arm and head. However, when rescue teams deployed search dogs and life detection equipment at the collapsed hotel Monday afternoon, no signs of life were found, and the husband was informed that his wife had died.
Lin Kuan-hung (林冠宏), head of the Overseas Community Affairs section at Taiwan’s representative office in Myanmar, has arrived in Mandalay and met with the husband to discuss further arrangements. The woman is the only known Taiwanese citizen to die from the earthquake.
