TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Formosan black bear named Aziman Siking (阿里曼.西肯) in Hualien’s Zhuoxi Township was caught again in a lasso trap and required medical treatment.
In December, the bear was found to frequently feast at a chicken coop, posing a threat to farmers. He was caught and transferred far from this food source, per CNA.
Field surveys indicate that Zhuoxi Township, located in the Central Mountain Range, is a hotspot for bear activity. Officials installed electric fences and image recognition warning devices, and residents were encouraged to report bear disturbances.
According to the bear's satellite tracking collar, it left its wintering location on March 12. It evaded the electric fences and invaded the chicken coop a week later.
On Wednesday, 67 people, including 20 from a tribal village, formed two groups to drive the bear away with fireworks and whistles. The bear continued to invade the chicken coop at night and rested near the edge of a cliff during the day.
Since efforts to drive away the bear failed, the group tried to capture the bear instead. Satellite positioning data indicated the bear was trapped Monday morning near the chicken coop.
The bear's right paw, which triggered the trap, was swollen. Veterinarians provided treatment, and the bear was taken to the WildOne Wildlife Conservation Association.
The bear, named after a Bunun warrior who led an 18-year guerrilla war against the Japanese, has proven to be a formidable opponent for farmers. Officials will decide whether to release the bear back into the wild.
