TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Civic groups and local leaders are raising concerns with the government over plans to extend the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) from Taipei to Yilan.
Following a public meeting in March on the proposed expansion, several local groups are petitioning the government to postpone the start of construction, per UDN. Petitioners say the plan lacks sufficient detail about the exact location of the new rail line.
Twelve civic groups and multiple local officials from Toucheng and Jiaoxi townships signed the petitions. They argue the current proposal does not adequately address the development of land designated for agricultural use or offer solutions for managing noise during the construction phase.
Approved in 2019, the expansion plan calls for about 20 kilometers of elevated track extending from Nangang THSR Station and running parallel to portions of National Highway No. 5. Upon reaching Yilan, the line would pass through Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Zhuangwei, and parts of Yilan City.
Many farmers and landowners say they only became aware of the track’s approximate route within the past month, raising concerns about land expropriation and potential disruptions to local livelihoods and infrastructure.
Petitioners also noted that some rural residents were unable to attend the March public meeting. They are urging the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) to hold additional meetings to clarify key issues and respond to public concerns. The petition is expected to be formally submitted to the MOTC on Monday.
