TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The son of former NBA slam dunk champion J.R. Rider is reportedly applying for a Taiwanese passport.
J.R. Rider’s full name is Isaiah Rider Jr., and his son is Isaiah Rider IV. Local media recently reported that Rider IV intends to apply for a Taiwan passport and ID card, and may even represent Taiwan’s national team in the future.
On Monday, Chang Cheng-chung (張承中), deputy secretary general of the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association, said he had been contacted by Rider IV’s mother, Vanessa Rider, and she appears to be “very proactive and very interested,” per CNA.
Chang said it has been confirmed that Rider IV’s maternal grandmother is Taiwanese and holds a Taiwan passport and ID card. However, neither Vanessa nor Rider IV currently has Taiwanese citizenship.

Chang said the association plans to help Vanessa obtain the necessary documents first and then move on to her son’s application. “We’ve already received the birth certificates of Vanessa and Isaiah Rider IV, and our goal is to complete the process smoothly within this year,” he said.
As for efforts to recruit Taiwanese-American brothers Adam Hinton and Robert Hinton to represent Taiwan in the FIBA Asia Cup this August, Chang said discussions are ongoing but there are no further updates at this time.
He confirmed, however, that the Hinton brothers will return to Taiwan this summer to participate in the William Jones Cup international basketball tournament. The women’s division is scheduled for July 2–6 at the Changhua Gymnasium, while the men’s tournament will be held July 12–20 at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium.
