TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in northeast Taiwan at 9:53 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The CWA said its epicenter was 15.5 km south-southeast of Yilan County Hall, with a 72.4 km focal depth. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to gauge the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Yilan County and Hualien County. An intensity level of 3 was reported in Taoyuan, New Taipei, Taichung, Nantou County, Hsinchu County, and Changhua County.
A level 2 intensity was recorded in Taipei, Keelung, Miaoli County, Hsinchu, Chiayi County, Yunlin County, Taitung County, and Chiayi. An intensity level of 1 was measured in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Penghu County.
