TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire broke out Saturday morning on a southbound Taiwan High Speed Rail train, sparking quick action from passengers and staff.
Police were alerted around 9:10 a.m. to the incident. The report stated the fire was caused by a portable power bank igniting in the first carriage of THSR train no. 1607, per UDN and Ettoday.
While no major injuries were reported, the passenger whose bag contained the power bank sustained minor burns to his left arm. The passenger received treatment at Zuoying Station.
THSR explained that when the train’s smoke detection system was triggered, passengers in the affected carriages were evacuated. Fire extinguishers used by passengers helped contain the flames.
In addition to coordinating assistance from station medical staff, THSR promptly notified the railway police. By the time the police arrived at Zuoying Station, the fire had already been extinguished by passengers.
Upon investigation, authorities found scattered burn marks on the train floor. Despite the fire, there was no significant damage to the carriages.
The train was brought into the depot for cleaning and maintenance. The incident did not cause any delays to train schedules.
An investigation is ongoing.
