TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Bureau said a passing weather front brought torrential rain across Taiwan, leading to localized flooding and traffic disruptions.
The Taoyuan City Government’s Department of Water Resources said the weather system delivered heavy rain and strong winds starting Saturday afternoon, according to CNA. The rainfall, described as comparable to a typhoon, triggered flooding in 15 districts, with Zhongli District the hardest hit.
The department said it activated its disaster response center to coordinate municipal departments and district offices in addressing the flooding. Authorities worked to divert traffic from waterlogged roads and urged motorists to use alternative routes.
In Taipei’s Shilin District, a sinkhole appeared on Sunday at the intersection of Wenlin Road and Meilun Street. The hole measured approximately one meter long, one meter wide, and about 20 centimeters deep. Police quickly sealed off the road to all vehicles after receiving the report.
Taipei City’s Public Works Department dispatched personnel to the scene for urgent repairs, noting that the sinkhole appeared to be expanding.
Meanwhile, in Kaohsiung’s Gangshan District, the Fire Department reported a fire just after midnight on Zhongshan North Road. One vehicle and two personnel were sent to the scene, where they found sparks coming from an electrical box on a utility pole.
The incident was later handled by Taipower, which determined the fire was caused by heavy rain affecting a high-voltage power line. The outage affected 1,350 households, but emergency crews restored electricity to all affected areas by 3:35 a.m.
