TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and current Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) reportedly visited Control Yuan President Chen Chu (陳菊) at a hospital in Kaohsiung on Saturday, according to UDN.
Chen, 74, remains in recovery at Kaohsiung Medical University’s Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital following a series of health issues and surgeries. She was initially admitted in December 2024 to receive treatment for influenza.
During a medical checkup, doctors discovered a tumor in her kidney, requiring surgery. After the operation, Chen was preparing for discharge when she suffered a brain embolism on Dec. 28.
Emergency surgery was successful, and her condition was reported as stable following the procedure. However, reports that she remains in convalescence more than four months later have raised questions about her health and ability to fulfill her duties as Control Yuan president.
After her operations in December, Chen returned two months of salary to the Control Yuan during her recovery period, per Now News. She had originally planned to resume work in March.
On Sunday, the hospital issued a statement saying Chen’s health continues to improve and that her doctors remain optimistic. However, it noted that the hospital is not authorized to release further details regarding her condition.
