TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Google on Tuesday announced it signed Taiwan’s first corporate geothermal power purchase agreement with Baseload Power Taiwan, a subsidiary of Sweden-based Baseload Capital.
Geothermal power generation uses heat from beneath the Earth’s surface to produce steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity. As a renewable energy source, it offers a stable supply of baseload power.
This marks Google’s first geothermal agreement in the Asia-Pacific region. The initial phase is expected to provide 10 megawatts (MW) of power to the local grid and contribute to the development of Taiwan’s geothermal market.
Taiwan’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire gives it access to significant geothermal resources. These conditions position geothermal energy as a potential option for enhancing energy stability and diversifying the country’s renewable portfolio.
Google previously signed Taiwan’s first corporate solar power purchasing agreement in 2019, securing long-term output from a 10-MW solar array that is part of a larger solar farm in Tainan. The addition of geothermal power builds on the company’s ongoing efforts to support clean energy procurement in the region.
