TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The economics ministry is optimistic about the water supply in the first half of the year as four reservoirs in north and central Taiwan are full, one of which reached capacity two months earlier than usual.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the ministry said Taoyuan’s Shihmen Reservoir, Hsinchu’s two Baoshan Reservoirs, and Miaoli’s Liyutan Reservoir are full, per CNA. The ministry said that despite its optimistic view of the water supply, the public is encouraged to conserve water due to the possibility of extreme weather.
The ministry said the Shihmen Reservoir filled due to heavy rain, and the water will be used to irrigate rice crops in Taoyuan and Hsinchu. It said the Miaoli Reservoir’s overflow gates were opened because it filled earlier than expected, also due to heavy rain over the weekend.
According to Water Resources Agency data, eight of the 11 reservoirs in north and central Taiwan were above 90% full on Tuesday. South Taiwan’s six reservoirs were 62% full on average, with the lowest level at Kaohsiung’s Akungtien Reservior (44% full) and the highest level at Tainan’s Nanhua Reservoir (81% full).
A large and steady water supply is crucial for Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. A report published by a Taiwanese think tank in February noted that the chip industry faced mounting water supply challenges due to the sector’s growth and climate change.
