TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Legislative Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) will lead a 17-member multiparty delegation to the US, reports said Tuesday.
Legislative Yuan USA Caucus Chair Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) sent out an invitation to visit the US from April 28 to May 2, UDN reported. The delegation will include eight lawmakers from the DPP, including Wang, eight from the KMT, including Chiang, and one TPP legislator.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is planning to brief the lawmakers Wednesday to help them achieve the best possible results during their trip, the China Times reported. Chiang said he would collect opinions from the manufacturing sector about the tariff issue and pass them on to the US.
During their visit, the lawmakers are likely to meet Taiwan envoy to Washington Alexander Yui (俞大㵢), members of Congress, and academics, reports said.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) expressed satisfaction with the first contacts between Taiwan and the US about tariffs on April 11. This was after President Donald Trump initially slapped a 32% tariff on imports from Taiwan, but later gave the country, among many others, 90 days to negotiate while a 10% basic tariff went into effect.
