TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Telecom announced Tuesday a partnership with US satellite firm Astranis to deploy its third-generation MicroGEO satellite.
It will be the first communication satellite dedicated to Taiwan, per a press release. Launch is scheduled for year-end and the satellite could begin serving Taiwan as early as next year, per CNA.
Chunghwa said the partnership will boost satellite capacity and enhance the resilience of its “sea to sky” network, which integrates geostationary orbit and low earth orbit systems.
Chunghwa Telecom Chair Chien Chih‐cheng (簡志誠) said the deal marks a key step in expanding Taiwan’s satellite footprint. He called the MicroGEO platform a critical tool for creating a secure digital infrastructure backup for Taiwan to meet natural disasters and geopolitical risks.
Astranis CEO John Gedmark said the company’s founding mission is to provide satellite capacity to regions in need. “We are honored to partner with Chunghwa Telecom to enhance the resilience of Taiwan’s critical communications infrastructure,” he added.
As global risks to communications increase, Chunghwa said it remains focused on building a globally connected digital resilience network.
