TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) called on the government and society Tuesday to unify against growing security threats at Cybersec in Taipei.
In his opening remarks he said that government websites faced an average of 2.4 million intrusion attempts daily in the last year — twice as many as the year before, per CNA.
Recently, ransomware group Crazy Hunter has targeted multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, and business. Investigations have traced the cyberattacks to China, raising the need to bolster Taiwan’s defensive capabilities, Lai explained.
In response, he outlined three new cybersecurity strategies: boosting resilience across society, developing a vibrant cybersecurity industry, and advancing defense tech for emerging technologies, per RTI.
He also cited his “17 national security response strategies,” requiring agencies to defend against cyberattacks conducted through apps, and AI. These efforts are intended to build Taiwan’s overall digital resilience and safeguard national security.
Additionally, Lai said the digital affairs ministry is revising the Cyber Security Management Act. The updated law will support stronger defenses across public and private sectors.
Cybersec, Taiwan’s flagship cybersecurity event, will run from April 15-17 at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2. It is expected to attract over 20,000 industry professionals and feature over 300 speeches.
