TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) praised close Taiwan-Tuvalu relations at a meeting with Tuvalu Deputy Prime Minister Panapasi Nelesone on Tuesday.
Lai thanked Tuvalu for its support of Taiwan’s international participation over the decades and said Nelesone’s visit was a significant step forward in bilateral ties, according to the Presidential Office. The president pointed out the two countries will sign two agreements — a labor cooperation agreement, and an accord on mutual recognition of seafarer training and certification documents — to strengthen relations.
Lai said Taiwan and Tuvalu are maritime nations that share the values of democracy and freedom. Both countries are protecting ocean resources and addressing climate change to uphold peace and prosperity in the Pacific, he said.
Lai added that Taiwan and Tuvalu have achieved fruitful results in agriculture, healthcare, and ICT, and he looked forward to continued collaboration.
Nelesone expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s support and enduring friendship. He emphasized that Taiwan’s commitment to bilateral relations is crucial for promoting shared values, including democracy and sustainable development.
The bilateral relationship is built on mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for sustainable development in the Pacific, the deputy prime minister said. He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to flourish and serve as a model for regional cooperation and solidarity.
Nelesone arrived in Taiwan on Monday for a five-day visit. He is slated to meet with high-level officials and visit Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and other government agencies for in-depth exchanges.
