TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Prosecutors searched 30 locations in New Taipei on Tuesday, including the KMT’s Banqiao and Sanchong offices, while investigating allegations of recall fraud.
CNA reported that prosecutors questioned 10 people involved with recall campaigns targeting DPP legislators and removed boxes of evidence from the KMT’s New Taipei offices. New Taipei KMT Caucus Leader Wang Wei-yuan (王威元) said the KMT’s Sanchong party committee leader was questioned.
Individuals promoting recalls against DPP Legislators Wu Chi-ming (吳琪銘), Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), Chang Hung-lu (張宏陸), and others were also questioned. The searches come after the Central Election Commission said on Monday that it referred 39 recall cases for investigation.
The commission said it suspected some signatures gathered to support recalls were forged or belonged to deceased individuals. It said it would report two more cases of suspected recall fraud in the coming days.
DPP Legislator Lee Kuen-cheng (李坤城) also filed a complaint with prosecutors in February alleging that recall groups committed fraud.
