TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Senator Pete Ricketts arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday for a four-day visit to engage with Taiwanese officials.
Discussions will cover US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, and other issues of mutual interest, according to the American Institute in Taiwan. Ricketts, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, is accompanied by fellow Senators Chris Coons and Ted Budd.
“Their visit underscores the United States’ commitment to its partnership with Taiwan and reaffirms our shared commitment to strengthening a free and open Indo-Pacific,” AIT said.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the visit and said the group would meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and attend banquets hosted by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍). The ministry lauded the trip as a demonstration of the US’ commitment to Taiwan's security and the bilateral partnership.
In February, Ricketts co-introduced a resolution opposing China’s efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty and international participation.
The resolution rejects China’s misinterpretation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 to justify its territorial claims over Taiwan. It also clarifies that Washington’s “one China” policy is distinct from Beijing’s “one China” principle and opposes China’s attempts to block Taiwan from joining global organizations.
The US must "firmly reject Beijing’s strong-arming and revisionist history while supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation and engagement on the world stage," Ricketts said at the time.
