TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan arrested a Hong Kong traveler during transit for moving 15 kilograms of ketamine from Belgium to Macau, reports said Wednesday.
The Criminal Investigation Bureau received information from customs in Belgium early one morning in late January, per CNA. As the suspect, a man from Hong Kong named Chan (陳), aged 30, only had two hours to transit at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the bureau quickly mobilized the Aviation Police Bureau and officers from Taipei’s Xinyi Precinct.
The notice from Belgium had arrived late because the X-ray image of Chan’s luggage had been vague, and by the time they concluded it contained drugs, his flight had already left. Police also noted that Chan planned to transit twice, in Austria and Taiwan, probably to make tracking him more difficult.
Once they stopped him, they found 15.11 kg of ketamine inside his luggage. The drugs had a value of NT$3 million (US$92,400), according to police.
Chan said that as a laborer in Hong Kong, he had spotted an online ad promising HK$100,000 (NT$418,000) to anyone for transporting luggage. A stranger contacted him by instant messaging, asking him to travel to Belgium to pick up a suitcase.
Taoyuan District Court ordered Chan detained while the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office investigated the case.
