TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The developer of the contested Core Pacific Plaza project has requested the cancellation of a 20% floor area bonus, reports said Wednesday.
Allegations about corruption involving the project and the previous Taipei City administration led to the detention of former Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), Core Pacific developer Sheen Ching-jing (沈慶京), and other former officials and politicians accused of accepting bribes to approve the project’s expansion.
Taipei City Government said Wednesday that Core Pacific Development Corporation applied on April 9 to cancel the 20% bonus, per CNA. The change would forego 120,000 square meters of floor area and a height of 19 floors for the project, though some other parts of the new building might have to be redesigned, city officials said.
Similar reports emerged in January, but Core Pacific Development later issued a denial it had abandoned the 20% bonus. Officials said Wednesday the new request would have to be discussed within three months of receiving the application, meaning July 9 would be the deadline for a decision.
In a reaction to Wednesday’s reports, Core Pacific Development said its request for the cancellation was only temporary, per CNA. If a court ruled that the 20% expansion was legal, it might apply to restore the floor area bonus, Core Pacific said.
