TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three Coast Guard officers had Chinese residence permits before their recruitment, Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) said Thursday.
All permits have since been legally revoked, Kuan said during a report to the Legislative Yuan's Internal Administration Committee, CNA reported. She said the individuals did not have access to sensitive information, and no Coast Guard personnel currently hold Chinese permanent residence permits or passports.
The revelation comes as the Ministry of National Defense reported 62 military staffers holding Chinese residence permits. Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) said none of the officers had Chinese IDs or passports so far.
Koo said holders of Chinese residency documents are not allowed to serve in sensitive military departments, including intelligence gathering and communications.
