TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chansn Hospital in Taoyuan’s Zhongli District was recently hit by a ransomware attack, disrupting medical services and potentially compromising over 80,000 patient records.
The Taoyuan Department of Public Health said the hospital reported receiving a ransom email on April 14 and was instructed to follow emergency protocols, per CNA. The hospital disconnected its internal and external networks, commissioned a systems scan, and filed a police report the next day, per UDN.
Zhongli Precinct confirmed the ransom demands were sent by email and signed by international hackers. Police suspect the involvement of overseas actors and have launched a formal investigation under computer crime laws.
As of Saturday, online registration at the hospital remained unavailable. Staff said digital systems were still under repair, but patients could register by phone or in person.
The hospital is reinstalling antivirus software and restoring its IT infrastructure. If evidence of a data breach emerges, it must report the leak under official ransomware response guidelines.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said it is monitoring the incident. Previous hospital cyberattacks on Mackay Memorial and Changhua Christian were cited as precedents.
Chansn Hospital, formerly part of the Hsinchu An Shen Clinic system, is a major local facility with long-term care services for up to 10,000 patients. The attack disrupted services including appointment booking, new patient intake, and prescription issuance.
