TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Google announced Tuesday that it signed a corporate power purchase agreement in March for Taichung’s Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm.
The deal was signed in March through Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ CI V fund, marking Google’s first such purchase in Taiwan and expanding its clean energy portfolio, per a press release. The agreement will provide Google with reliable power to support its data centers and offices in the region.
CIP Asia-Pacific head Thomas Wibe Poulsen said this is the company’s second offshore wind deal with Google after a 250 MW agreement for the Zeevonk project in the Netherlands, per CNA. He noted the Taiwan contract strengthens Fengmiao 1’s corporate customer base.
Google said the agreement represents a major milestone for its clean energy strategy in the region. “Once operational in 2027, the project will provide reliable power to support Google's data center, cloud region, and offices in Taiwan,” the company added.
Hsiao I-chun (蕭義俊), Senior Associate for Energy Infrastructure at Google Asia-Pacific, commented that the deal gives Google access to affordable carbon-free electricity. He said offshore wind complements solar by delivering steady output during low-sunlight periods.
CIP said Fengmiao 1 is now under construction following financial close on March 19. The wind farm will be located about 35 kilometers off the coast of Taichung and will feature 33 turbines with a total capacity of 500 MW.
