TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s Transportation Department said Tuesday the number of EV chargers in the city’s public parking lots reached 1,276.
The department said the city government has expanded the installation of EV charging stations to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and promote green transportation. Taipei has the highest number of public EV chargers in Taiwan, with the total expected to reach 1,600 by year's end, per CNA.
The city has around 24,000 EVs, which help reduce carbon emissions by 54,000 tonnes annually. The department noted that this reduction is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of nearly 140 Daan Forest Parks.
The department said it has collaborated with Evoasis to introduce AC smart chargers. These chargers allow EV owners to charge their vehicles automatically after a one-time registration through a mobile app. The company installed more than 300 smart chargers across eight districts in the city.
Evoasis said that its smart charging stations are integrated with an energy management system. This system can automatically adjust the charging power based on a building’s electricity usage, effectively distributing the load and preventing power outages.
According to the transportation ministry, the number of electric passenger vehicles in Taiwan reached 99,980 as of February, an increase of around 39,000 compared to the same period last year. There are 10,838 public charging connectors nationwide, meeting the EU's recommended ratio of one public charger for every ten electric vehicles.
The ministry allocated NT$980 million (US$30 million) to subsidize the installation of 4,865 public charging connectors. Of these, 1,075 are already in operation, and the remaining 3,790 are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
