TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei prosecutors on Tuesday appealed a court’s decision to release the KMT's Taipei branch leader, whom they suspect of recall fraud.
The Taipei District Court released KMT Taipei Chair Huang Lu Chin-ju (黃呂錦茹) on Saturday after questioning her overnight regarding fraud suspicions linked to recall campaigns against two DPP legislators. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office appealed the decision as it did not agree with the court's reasoning, per UDN.
The court released Huang and her subordinate Tseng Fan-chuan (曾繁川) without bail, stating there was cause to keep them detained. Prosecutors did not appeal the decision to release Tseng.
Upon releasing Huang and Tseng, the court detained KMT Taipei branch staffers Chu Wen-ching (初文卿) and Yao Fu-wen (姚富文) incommunicado for two months in relation to the case. The investigation regards allegations that signatures for recall campaigns were gathered fraudulently, including by using deceased people's signatures.
Mirror Media reported that all four suspects have denied wrongdoing. The report stated that prosecutors questioned several individuals whose signatures were presented in support of the recall campaigns, and many said they had not signed.
The KMT responded to the appeal with a statement accusing prosecutors of being biased towards the ruling DPP. The party said it is planning a demonstration outside the presidential office on Saturday to protest the DPP’s alleged interference in the judiciary.
