TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Hidden inside the pages of picture books are some of the favorite foods of Shoushan Zoo’s chimpanzees: sunflower seeds, dried pineapples, and raisins.
These edible books made from recycled paper are also intended to train the focus and observation skills of chimpanzees. Two chimpanzees at the zoo, Meizhen (美珍) and Manhua (曼華), do a good job of climbing to their perch and peering into their books.
They are, of course, hunting for snacks rather than nourishing their minds. Meanwhile, an impatient chimpanzee, Lizhong (莉忠), bites open the book, causing food to scatter all over the ground.
April 23 each year is World Book Day, which was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to commemorate the contributions of literary giants. Shoushan Zoo thought it was appropriate to celebrate this event with their chimpanzee population, as children's books frequently feature animals, encouraging curious children to go on literary adventures.
