TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Smoke erupted from the Navy destroyer Magong in the military port of Suao during repair work, reports said Wednesday.
Members of the public took pictures of smoke enveloping the ship after 2:10 p.m., the Liberty Times reported. The Navy later issued a statement saying the smoke was the result of carelessness during repairs, but was not the result of a fire.
The Keelung-class destroyer was docked inside the Yilan County military harbor. Following standard protocol, all personnel were immediately evacuated from the ship, the Navy said.
The authorities sent 14 firefighters in eight vehicles to the scene to help prevent a fire from erupting. Nobody was injured during the incident and nobody needed to be transferred to hospital, the Navy said.
The Magong was one of four ships originally serving in the US Navy under the name of Kidd-class destroyers. They were delivered to Taiwan in 2005 and 2006, and based in Suao.
