TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A survey published Wednesday found Netflix to be the most used video streaming service in Taiwan, while broadcast TV remains popular.
The survey, conducted by the Institute for Information Industry in the final quarter of last year, found that 75% of the 1,068 people surveyed used paid video subscription services, per CNA. It found 51% used Netflix, 23% used Disney+, 10% used iQiyi, and 8% used Hami Video.
The survey also found the average monthly spend for streaming service subscribers was NT$323 (US$9.40). When including non-paid video streaming services, social media platforms emerged as the most popular, with 75% of respondents reporting they used them.
Around 72% of respondents said they watched both traditional TV and streaming services, while 53% said they had gone to the theater to see movies. About half of those surveyed said they had increased their consumption of online streaming and social media video over the past year, while 12% said they had watched less traditional TV.
The survey found up to 79% of video streaming platform subscribers shared accounts with others. It also found that 14% of subscribers paid more for video streaming over the past year than the previous year.
Analyst for government think tank Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute, Hung Chi-ya (洪齊亞), said streaming video platforms aim to provide exclusive content to gain customers. He said simultaneous releases on streaming platforms and in theaters have also become popular.
Hung said the companies that first entered the streaming market have a clear advantage. He added that the survey results showed most subscribers will mainly use one platform and occasionally access another.
