TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) expressed condolences to the victims of an attack on Wednesday that killed 26 people in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
In an X post on Thursday, Lai wrote that Taiwan stands with the international community in “strongly condemning this atrocious act of violence against civilians.” “Our hearts are with the people of India,” he wrote.
Indian Police said four militants shot mainly Indian tourists from close range in the attack, per AP. They said militants fighting against Indian rule in Kashmir were responsible.
India’s representative office in Taiwan said it was “deeply moved” by Lai’s condolences in an X post. “His words will provide strength to the bereaved families,” a post on the India Taipei Association’s X account read.
Other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, condemned the attack. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short a visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to New Delhi.
“Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice,” Modi wrote in an X post. “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, their handlers, and their backers,” he said.
